When the primeval sea receded in the Bavarian Altmühltal about 180 million years ago and the animals and plants of the marine world slowly sank to the bottom, Jura limestone was formed. It enclosed the ancient living beings of our prehistoric era as fossils, making it a unique witness to our past to this day.
